For Organizations

The workplace can be brutal. We’re asked to do a lot, under tight timelines.

Power and privilege are misused and abused to sideline and marginalize people just because of who they are.

On a good day, maybe our boss tries to understand and make a shift, but usually they’re just carrying out orders from above.

The stakes are high: our families are depending on us to bring home that paycheck.

It’s a recipe for stress, loneliness, and unhappiness — and for perpetuating existing power dynamics and the unjust systems that support them.

 
 

It doesn’t have to be this way.

What if the folks with the most power took it upon themselves to do the adapting, so that front-line workers and historically marginalized folks wouldn’t always have to be assimilating to the dominant organizational “norms”?

And what if we had a big box of tools, not only for understanding others’ behavior and our own behavior, but for changing how we behave, so that we can create truly inclusive teams and organizations?

Humans are animals. Like all animals, we’re driven to survive. Our amygdala keeps us alert to threats in our environment — and does the workplace ever provide those!

Unlike other animals, humans have the “higher brain”: the neocortex and other regions that give us the ability to manage and counter the amygdala.

What if we could use our higher brain to take a critical look at our own power? What if, instead of instinctively protecting it, we could learn to use it to change behaviors and systems? What if, instead of seeing our colleagues’ “annoying” behavior as some sort of character flaw, we could instead focus on our reactions to their behavior? What if we could learn to see everyone’s behavior as a kind of cultural and individual programming — programming that we can learn to see from a distance, so that we can be more intentional in the actions we choose to take?

I believe humans have everything we need to create a better world. We have the tools. We need to learn to use them, and then keep using them, every day.
